Ukraine to scrutinise officials’ declared cryptocurrency holdings

The National Agency for Prevention of Corruption (НАПК) of Ukraine will verify officials who declared cryptocurrencies in their 2020 declarations. This was announced on Facebook by сообщил the head of the Directorate for Mandatory Full Checks at НАПК, Sergei Petukhov.

According to him, the NAПК will verify whether the declarants actually own the indicated amount of cryptocurrency, whether funds were transferred for their purchase, and whether the official can explain the origin of the money used to buy the digital currencies.

This year NAПК has already begun 250 checks; in some of them the agency is examining the declared bitcoins.

If the declaration contains inaccurate information about cryptocurrencies, officials may face administrative or criminal liability, Petukhov added.

“If you have doubts about the accuracy of the declared data regarding crypto or the sufficiency of the declarant’s funds to acquire it — file a report with NAПК outlining the facts; we can check such a declarant,” he noted.

Petukhov stressed that NAПК published разъяснения on cryptocurrency declarations at the start of the year.

As reported by OpenDatabot’s public registry monitoring service, Ukrainian officials declared a total of 46,351 BTC in their 2020 declarations.
