Uniswap blocks 253 addresses, some linked to Tornado Cash

Uniswap, the leading non-custodial exchange, blocked at the frontend level 253 addresses linked to criminal activity and activity on подсанкционной платформе микширования Tornado Cash.

The addresses were added to the blacklist over four months with the involvement of analytics firm TRM Labs. Uniswap Labs disclosed data about such blockades for the first time.

\n\n\n\n

Developer Jordan Frankfurt noted in comments on GitHub that initially constraints applied even to addresses only tangentially related to sanction targets. The exchange then narrowed the selection. Now blockades apply to addresses from sanction lists, as well as those directly linked to criminals’ activity.

\n\n\n\n

TRM Labs checks and classifies suspicious addresses across several categories. The main ones:

\n\n\n\n

• stolen funds;
• related to the Tornado Cash mixer;
• sanctioned addresses;
• associated with scam projects;
• involved with notorious hacker groups;
• used to finance terrorism;
• involved in the distribution of child pornography.

\n\n\n\n

Developer Banteg counted 30 addresses in the format ENS. He suggested that most of them belong to ordinary users not involved in illicit activity.

Uniswap Labs began blocking addresses at the frontend level in April.

Analysts at TRM Labs described the sanctions against Tornado Cash as a compliance challenge.
