US authorities put up 0.7501 BTC for auction.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has put up for auction 0.7501 BTC — about $40,300 at the time of writing, according to information on the agency’s сайте ведомства.

The starting bid is $25,000. The auction will begin on March 15 and run for 48 hours.

The authorities did not specify where the initial cryptocurrency came from or why the coins were put up for auction through the GSA.

\n

The auction winner must make payment via bank by March 19 and complete the \”Proof of Sale of Confiscated Property\” Form. The winner will then declare that he is not an employee of the DOJ or a former holder of the digital assets.

The GSA is an independent agency within the U.S. government. The agency’s remit includes assisting in the management and support of the federal government’s essential functions, as well as handling administrative tasks.

\n

Previously, Bitcoin was put up for auction by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS). In 2014, officials sold 30,000 BTC seized from the Silk Road darknet marketplace. All lots were purchased by venture capitalist Tim Draper.

In February 2020, USMS auctioned 4,040.54 BTC. The coins were bought by two winners.

Earlier, the service managed the seized cryptocurrency in-house, but in the summer of 2020 it began seeking a contractor to store and sell the confiscated bitcoins.
