US authorities to review competition rules for AI

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) intends to prevent the dominance of tech giants in the field of artificial intelligence. Bloomberg reports.

According to FTC Chair Lina Khan, the agency is paying close attention to AI developments:

“As machine learning relies on vast amounts of data and storage, we must exercise vigilance and ensure that this is not another platform for a large company that makes it even bigger.”

Earlier the FTC launched an inquiry into cloud computing, seeking information on data security as well as competition in the sector. Among the largest providers of these services are Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

Khan also said that developers of AI tools must ensure they do not “overstate or embellish” the capabilities of their products.

“Sometimes we see statements that are not fully verified or that do not accurately reflect how these technologies work. The developers of these tools could potentially be held responsible if the products they create are designed to deceive,” she said.

The heightened attention from U.S. antitrust authorities to AI tools is likely linked to the boom in large language models and chatbots built on them. In February Microsoft and Google unveiled advanced conversational AI-powered search engines in quick succession.

In March, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, launched API chatbot. Since then, dozens of companies have gained access to the tool and integrated it into their products.

Chatbots built on large language models are being developed by other companies, from giants like Baidu to small startups.

In February, the FTC issued guidelines on advertising AI products. The agency pledged to punish unscrupulous firms that make “false or unfounded” claims about their products.
