US authorities warn of North Korean IT specialists' involvement in crypto projects

The U.S. Treasury, the State Department and the FBI issued a document warning about the activities of North Korean IT specialists who take on contract work for various technology projects, including cryptocurrency projects.

According to U.S. authorities, North Korea derives income through such employees, which it channels to finance its weapons programmes.

North Korean specialists may pose as citizens of other countries, using VPNs, stolen or forged documents.

The agencies believe that North Korea–linked employees often work on projects focused on the cryptocurrency sector.

«Some IT specialists from North Korea developed virtual currency exchanges or created analytical tools and applications for traders, and they themselves sold such products», the document states.

Earlier, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the FBI and the Treasury warned about the North Korea–linked hackers’ focus on the crypto industry.
