The National Advisory Committee on Artificial Intelligence (NAIAC) was formed by the Department of Commerce, the National AI Initiative Office, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
According to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the body is intended to provide recommendations on several AI issues, including ‘competitiveness’, employment, scientific progress, the viability of the national strategy and future reviews of initiatives. The committee will also address ethical questions, ranging from workforce equality to accountability and algorithmic bias.
We have witnessed significant advances in AI […]. We must ensure that these advances are accompanied by similar progress in guaranteeing the reliability of the technology, fairness and the protection of civil rights,\” said White House science adviser Eric Lander.
Members of the committee will be from a broad and interdisciplinary pool, including academics, companies, non-profit organizations, and federal laboratories. The Department of Commerce has already announced a competition to fill vacancies on the NAIAC.
This is not the first major institution shaping the use of AI by the U.S. government. However, experts say that NAIAC could make AI a regular matter of consideration in public policy.
In June, the White House established a working group on artificial intelligence.
In May, American senators proposed to invest $110 billion over five years in the development of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence.
In March, the Pentagon urged to expand the use of AI technologies to ‘not fall behind competitors’.
