Visa chief says the company has broad opportunities in the cryptocurrency space

Visa has “extremely good opportunities” in the field of digital assets, said CEO Alfred Kelly during the teleconference on the fiscal year’s second-quarter results.

Kelly mentioned elements of the firm’s broader cryptocurrency strategy, including the ability to buy and spend virtual assets linked to them API for financial institutions, settlements via stablecoins and CBDC.

“Therefore we are focusing on five distinct opportunities we see in this space. We are engaging broadly in it, and I believe we have very good opportunities,” said the head of Visa.

Regarding CBDC, he said the company has been talking with central banks about developing this asset class.

“We are talking with central banks about the importance of public-private partnerships and, in particular, the adoption of CBDC. For these digital currencies to have value in consumers’ minds, they must be secure, and that is an area where we have a long track record and where we can help,” said Kelly.

In January he presented the company’s cryptocurrency strategy during a similar conference on the first-quarter results.

In March, Kelly unveiled details of the company’s crypto strategy, highlighting two main directions. At the same time, the head of the company said that they are already working with 35 players in the digital-currency industry.

In 2020, Visa connected its global network to Circle’s USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin.
