White House to deploy ‘responsible’ AI in government agencies

The U.S. government will seek public input on its plans to use AI in government agencies. This, as announced by the Office of Management and Budget under the Biden administration.

“AI is one of the most powerful technologies of our time, but in order to harness the opportunities it provides, we must first reduce the risks associated with it,” the department said.

According to the statement, President Joe Biden asked that people be placed at the center of the deployment of innovations, safeguarding society and the economy.

The administration’s AI governance policy is set to be published in the summer. The public will have the opportunity to discuss the document before policymakers act.

It is expected that government agencies will be able to “use AI responsibly to advance missions and strengthen their capacity to serve Americans fairly”.

The administration also said it would work with leading AI developers, including Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI and Stability AI. The projects of these companies will also be subject to public review, the department said.

In May, Vice President Kamala Harris held a meeting with heads of technology companies, where they discussed AI-related risks.

During the event, the administration announced $140 million to launch seven new AI research institutes.

In April, Biden called concerns about artificial intelligence premature.
