Asset manager WisdomTree has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing to launch a bitcoin-based exchange-traded fund (ETF).
The WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust’s share price will be calculated based on the CME CF Bitcoin Index, which aggregates quotes for the leading cryptocurrency across major spot trading venues.
WisdomTree intends to list the bitcoin ETF on the Cboe BZX exchange under the ticker BTCW.
The firm did not name who will act as custodian of the fund’s digital assets. The trustee is listed as Delaware Trust Company.
On review by the Commission are already applications to launch exchange-traded funds based on the leading cryptocurrency from VanEck, Bitwise Asset Management, Valkyrie Digital Assets and NYDIG.
Earlier, Galaxy Digital founder Mike Novogratz said he was confident the SEC would approve a bitcoin ETF this year.
Galaxy Digital, together with CI Global Asset Management, has already launched a similar investment instrument in Canada.
