NFT collector loses 100 ETH after ill-timed joke about selling ENS domain

A prominent NFT collector lost 100 ETH after a joking bet on the ENS domain Ethereum Name Service (ENS) he had registered.

The user, going by the handle Franklinisbored, who owns 57 tokens from the BAYC collection, registered the ENS domain stop-doing-fake-bids-its-hoestly-lame-my-guy.eth through an alternate wallet. He then placed a bid of 100 ETH (~$148,900) from his main address.

He said it was intended as a joke. He wanted to mock the ENS Bids Twitter bot by prompting it to write about a large bid to buy the domain.

Subsequently, the collector продал the domain to an anonymous user for 1.9 ETH (~$2,830), which he wrote about on Twitter, calling it “the most astonishing profit.”

However, he forgot to cancel his own 100 ETH bid, which the new owner accepted 15 minutes after the sale.

«Oh no, I lost 100 ETH. I was celebrating the joke about the sale, bragging about the profit, but greed made me forget to cancel my own bid to buy it back. This will be the joke and bag fumble of the century. I deserve all of the jokes and criticism», — wrote Franklinisbored.

The domain returned to the collector. As of writing, the best offer for it stands at 0.125 ETH (~$186). Franklinisbored, in response, sent back his 1.9 ETH to the buyer/seller.

Earlier, the owner of the ENS domain amazon.eth ignored the bid of 1 million USDC and its bid time expired.
