NFT portraits of Julian Assange presented at Venice Biennale

A Greek artist, Miltos Manetas, a friend of Julian Assange, unveiled a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) depicting the WikiLeaks founder. It became part of Biennale Arte, the international contemporary-art exhibition.

The collection, titled This Cannot Be Erased, comprises 111 NFTs and features portraits of Assange. The musical accompaniment is by composer Howie B.

Manetas chose the Materia platform to issue the tokens. In total, three drops are planned, the first of which began on June 27. The price of a single NFT is 0.876 ETH (roughly $1,000 at the time of writing).

Proceeds will be directed to a fund supporting the WikiLeaks founder and to an independent online art pavilion. According to Manetas, the aim of the NFT collection is not to let people forget about Assange’s situation, \”because many media outlets have stopped covering the case\”.

Since 2012, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has faced U.S. charges of conspiring to obtain and disclose state secrets. He was arrested in London in 2019.

In June 2022, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel approved Assange’s extradition to the United States, where he faces a 175-year prison sentence. On July 1, it was announced that he had filed an appeal against the decision.

In February, the digital artist Pak announced a collaboration with Assange to launch a line of NFTs under the name Censored.

In the same month, AssangeDAO, created to aid in the WikiLeaks founder’s release from prison, raised 12,732 ETH (about $39.1 million at the time).
