A beta version of the filter is available in the Nvidia Broadcast 1.4 app. The artificial intelligence ‘replaces’ the human eyes in the video with ‘synthetic’ ones that are almost always directed at the camera.
The company said the tool attempts to copy the colour of the user’s eyes. The filter can also be disabled ‘if you’re looking too far’.
The filter has some issues. For instance, the artificial gaze may not always look natural. The built-in animation of the synthetic eyes can also cause them to move chaotically.
The company believes that ‘Eye Contact’ will help content creators who want to read notes or a script without having to look directly at the camera.
There is a possibility that users will employ the tool to mislead interlocutors in online meetings with colleagues or family. Nvidia Broadcast 1.4 enables streaming video to applications such as Zoom.
The company noted that the filter is in beta testing and asked the community to help improve it.
“There are millions of eye colours and lighting combinations. If you encounter any issues or would like to help us with further development, please send us a short video,” the announcement says.
In addition to Eye Contact, the Nvidia Broadcast app offers other AI filters, including noise suppression for the built-in microphone and background replacement for video. All of these features are free, but a graphics card with RT cores is required to run them.
In September 2022, Nvidia introduced the GET3D model, which generates three-dimensional objects.
In the same month at GTC 2022, the tech giant announced a range of products and services, including the new version of the AI game upscaler DLSS 3.
