OpenAI Acquires Chat.com Domain

The AI startup OpenAI has acquired the domain name Chat.com. Visitors to the site are now redirected to the ChatGPT chatbot, as noted by the company’s CEO, Sam Altman.

Chat.com is one of the oldest domains on the Internet, registered in September 1996. Last year, HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah purchased it for $15.5 million.

In March 2023, Shah announced the sale of the domain name to an undisclosed buyer for a sum “greater than what he paid.” On X, he hinted that OpenAI settled the deal with company shares.

Details remain undisclosed.

On October 31, the AI startup unveiled the ChatGPT Search engine.

Previously, it raised $6.6 billion at a valuation of $157 billion.
