OpenAI Considers Transition to Commercial Business Model

OpenAI is contemplating a shift in its management structure towards a commercial business model. This was revealed by the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, to some shareholders, according to The Information, citing an informed source.

The creation of a commercial B-Corp is one of the scenarios reportedly under consideration by the board of directors. This move would lay the groundwork for a potential IPO. In February, OpenAI concluded a private share sale valued at $86 billion.

Such a transition would enable the company to generate profit while still pursuing its original goal of contributing to the public good.

“We remain focused on creating artificial intelligence that benefits everyone. The non-profit organization is the foundation of our mission and will continue to exist,” OpenAI representatives told Reuters.

Back in February, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman for allegedly breaching an agreement to develop technology for the benefit of humanity rather than for profit.

In June, the billionaire withdrew the lawsuit with the option to resume proceedings.
