OpenAI Deploys Secure Version of ChatGPT for the Pentagon

OpenAI deploys a secure ChatGPT version for the Pentagon on GenAI.mil.

OpenAI has deployed a special version of ChatGPT on GenAI.mil, a secure platform of the U.S. Department of Defense.

This initiative has expanded access for the U.S. military to advanced AI models. They are already using Gemini from Google and Grok from xAI.

“We believe that those responsible for the country’s defense should have access to the best tools. It is also important for the U.S. and other democratic countries to understand how, with proper safeguards, AI can help protect people, deter adversaries, and prevent future conflicts,” stated the OpenAI announcement.

The custom version of ChatGPT is integrated into the authorized government cloud infrastructure. The system is equipped with built-in security mechanisms for handling the department’s confidential data.

The chatbot is designed to support everyday tasks:

• analysis and summarization of regulatory documents;
• preparation of materials for government procurement and contracts;
• creation of internal reports and checklists;
• administrative and research support for tasks.

Risks Remain

OpenAI assured that data on the GenAI.mil platform is completely isolated. The information is not used for training the company’s public or commercial models.

However, Public Citizen representative J.B. Branch highlighted potential threats. In his view, uploading any sensitive information into AI systems makes it vulnerable to external attacks.

“Such data should be accessible only to a limited group of people. Even if there is an isolated system permitted only within military structures, it does not change the fact that classified information is initially intended only for a narrow circle of individuals,” he stated.

Back in July 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense allocated contracts worth up to $200 million to companies Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI for the development of AI solutions in the security sector.
