OpenAI is in discussions with Broadcom and other chip developers to create a new artificial intelligence chip, according to sources cited by The Information.
The startup is reportedly considering developing its own chips due to a shortage of costly graphics processors used in neural network development.
Additionally, the company is hiring former Google employees who previously worked on AI chip development for the search giant, the publication notes.
“OpenAI is constantly negotiating with industry and government representatives to expand access to the infrastructure necessary for the widespread distribution of artificial intelligence benefits,” sources told The Information.
According to media reports, the startup will require additional funding or commercial partnerships to realize its chip development plans.
“It is safe to say that this will require enormous amounts of money,” emphasized a person familiar with the company’s plans.
In February, it was reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was in talks with investors to raise between $5 trillion and $7 trillion for an ambitious chip production project.
Earlier, media reported on OpenAI’s desire to shift its governance structure towards a commercial business model.
