OpenAI Gains Access to TIME’s Century-Long Archives

OpenAI and TIME have entered into a multi-year partnership, granting the AI startup access to the magazine’s current content and archives spanning over a century.

Sam Altman’s company will utilize the publication’s materials “to enhance its products,” likely for AI training. The magazine’s content will appear in ChatGPT responses to user inquiries, complete with citations and links to the original source.

“Throughout its 101-year history, TIME has innovated to ensure credible journalism evolves with technology. The partnership with OpenAI advances our mission to expand access to reliable information worldwide, as we continue to employ new innovative ways to deliver TIME’s journalism to audiences globally,” commented the magazine’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Howard.

Under the agreement, the magazine will gain access to OpenAI’s technologies “to develop new products for its audience.”

“We are collaborating with TIME to simplify access to news content through our AI tools and to support authoritative journalism by ensuring proper attribution to the original source,” stated the AI startup’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap.

Previously, OpenAI faced several lawsuits over alleged copyright infringements. Notably, on June 27, the Center for Investigative Reporting filed claims against the company and Microsoft.

In December, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against the AI startup for intellectual property violations.

In May, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership to integrate the social platform with the ChatGPT chatbot and other AI products.
