A recent executive order from the White House tasked national laboratories with assessing the capabilities of advanced AI models. OpenAI noted that artificial intelligence could significantly accelerate scientific progress.
As part of the initiative, experts will explore the use of GPT-4o for tasks in a physical laboratory environment using multimodal capabilities such as vision and voice.
“AI is a powerful tool that can greatly benefit science, but like any new technology, it comes with risks,” commented Nick Generous, deputy head of the information systems and modeling group at LANL.
He noted that a new specialized team at Los Alamos will lead the effort to understand and assess AI risks.
Founded in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project to develop nuclear weapons under physicist Robert Oppenheimer, the Los Alamos National Laboratory now engages in a wide range of scientific research, including physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and national security.
Previously, media reported on a breach at OpenAI and the theft of information about the company’s latest technologies.
Earlier, a new AI model was able to detect 13 different types of cancer with 98.2% accuracy.
In July, Near Protocol co-founder Ilya Polosukhin stated that AI will not destroy humanity unless given such an order.
