The activation was supported by holders of the OP utility token.
During the upgrade, the network will be unavailable for two to four hours. Deposits and withdrawals will be unavailable.
“Bedrock will increase the security and resilience of the Optimism bridge to the Ethereum mainnet. The upgrade is designed with the smallest possible divergence from the Ethereum blockchain, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Equivalence to Ethereum + minimized complexity = less room for error, making it easier for ecosystem developers to contribute,” — the developers explained.
Bedrock is expected to reduce fees by 47%.
Node operators will need to upgrade to new software.
“Bedrock will make it easy to contribute to a diverse range of clients (Magi by Andreessen Horowitz + op-erigon by testinprod.io are the first proof of this)”, — the developers noted.
The update will provide the foundation for Super Chains, enabling the creation of more networks such as Base by Coinbase.
According to DeFi Llama, TVL of Optimism stands at $865.3 million, lagging behind rival Arbitrum ($2.39 billion).
