Pentagon tests decision-making system to compete with Russia and China
The Pentagon conducted a series of tests to achieve “information dominance” and “decision superiority,” uniting global sensor networks, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The Drive reports this.
The leadership of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) believes that artificial intelligence and machine learning tools may offer the Pentagon a way to “foresee days ahead” by assessing patterns, anomalies and trends in massive data sets. Commander Gen. Glen VanHerck said that this capability is already realized with tools available to the DoD.
“The ability to foresee days ahead creates space for decision-making, which could potentially create deterrence forces to relay them to the secretary or even the president,” the commander said.
In the experiment, artificial intelligence tools were used to perform real-time data analysis. According to VanHerck, the tests also included support from the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and Project Maven — a DoD program that uses AI to analyze surveillance data and rapidly identify actionable information.
“We are not creating new capabilities to obtain data and information. This information comes from existing satellites, radars, cyber and intelligence capabilities. The data exist. We are making these data available … and sending them to the cloud, where machine learning and artificial intelligence look at them, process them very quickly and provide them to decision-makers,” VanHerck added.
The general also noted that the United States Space Command participated in the experiments. Representatives studied options to keep rivals’ space and ground assets at risk.
In his remarks, VanHerck implicitly referred to Russia and China, stating that the United States currently has “two equal rivals, both with nuclear weapons.” However, he did not name a specific simulated adversary.
Earlier in May, military experts accused the Pentagon of succumbing to the hype around artificial intelligence .
In late March, the U.S. Department of Defense urged to expand the use of AI to avoid losing to China and Russia.
In early March, the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence published a report on preserving the United States’ technological dominance with recommendations for government and business.
A week later, the Chinese government presented a five-year plan to accelerate the development of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
