
Pepe the Frog meme creator wins removal of NFT project
The OpenSea NFT marketplace has delisted the Sad Frogs District project for copyright infringement. The takedown request was submitted by Matt Furie, the creator of the Pepe the Frog meme, Decrypt reports.
The project comprises 7,000 randomly generated images of the character based on more than 200 traits. According to NFT Stats, at the time of writing the trading volume had exceeded $4 million.
According to the team, Sad Frogs District “passed OpenSea checks.”

On August 16, a Twitter user said that OpenSea had removed the NFT project at Fury’s request.

OpenSea representatives said they took this step after receiving a takedown request related to copyright infringement.
«We know this is probably disappointing, and we don’t like doing this, but we must comply with lawful takedown requests», Decrypt quotes the OpenSea notice.
On August 17, the Sad Frogs team said it had sent a counter-notice to the marketplace.

Back in June 2021, Fury announced the release of an NFT collection featuring his character. He explained the NFT interest as a way to challenge people’s notions of ownership.
