Perplexity Launches AI Assistant on Android

Startup Perplexity has introduced the Perplexity Assistant, an AI agent for Android devices. The assistant can book a dinner reservation, arrange a ride, set reminders, and perform other tasks.

The digital assistant can browse web pages to complete tasks and remember contextual information. The tool is multimodal, including video analysis. Users can activate the camera and inquire about what is in the frame.

In an example provided by Perplexity, the assistant was asked for a ride. It identified the address and automatically opened Uber with available rides to the destination.

Perplexity Assistant is available in 15 languages on the Google Play Store. It is not yet available on iOS, as the company awaits approval from Apple.

The assistant does not work with all applications. For instance, it lacks access to Slack or Reddit and cannot post comments on YouTube.

Previously, OpenAI introduced its own AI agent, “Operator,” capable of performing tasks on the internet on behalf of the user.

Back in October 2024, AI startup Anthropic released an updated version of the Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, which can interact with a computer like a human—moving the cursor, clicking buttons, and typing text.
