In December 2020, the SEC accused Ripple of selling unregistered securities in the form of XRP tokens worth $1.3 billion. The defendants also included Brad Garlinghouse and Chris Larsen. The regulator placed emphasis on their actions in the amended complaint, filed in February 2021.

On April 7, Judge Sarah Netburn granted Ripple’s motion for access to SEC documents revealing the regulator’s interpretation and views on Bitcoin and Ethereum.

In September, the press reported that the SEC does not consider Ethereum a security, because it is a fully developed blockchain infrastructure that has been operating for several years.

Earlier, in June 2020, Brandt described the XRP token as a ‘manipulative scam’ and urged investors to stay away from Ripple.
