Phishing Accounts for 92% of April’s Crypto Crime Revenue

In April, the crypto industry suffered total losses of $364 million due to hacking attacks, fraud, and breaches. According to CertiK, $337 million of this amount was linked to phishing.

The largest incident involved the theft of 3520 BTC from an elderly investor in the United States. The perpetrators used social engineering techniques to gain access to the crypto wallet.

The stolen funds were transferred through six platforms and converted into Monero, leading to a 50% increase in XMR.

April also saw attacks on the DeFi protocol Loopscale ($5.8 million) and the zkSync airdrop smart contract (~$5 million). Some of the stolen funds were recovered with the help of white-hat hackers, CertiK noted.

Losses in April were significantly higher than March’s $28.8 million but fell short of the February record, when hackers extracted $1.5 billion following the Bybit breach.

CertiK highlighted a steady increase in phishing attacks and advised investors to verify website addresses and smart contracts before transactions. Experts also recommended using cold wallets and refraining from disclosing savings information on social media.

Earlier, CertiK co-founder Ronghui Gu noted that in the first quarter of 2024, the volume of crypto thefts rose by 303% compared to the previous quarter, reaching $1.67 billion. Most attacks targeted the Ethereum ecosystem, he reported.

Specialists from Global Ledger reported that the total damage from 265 crypto breaches throughout 2024 and the first two months of 2025 exceeded $3.83 billion.
