The platform Pinterest has updated its visual search function, incorporating several new AI-driven capabilities. These include tools for more accessible and precise analysis across the site.
The company believes that the new features will help Pinterest carve out a unique niche as a search engine for concepts that are difficult to express in words: feelings, style, aesthetics. One tool will allow users to more accurately identify what specifically caught their attention in a particular pin.
When a user clicks on an item, an animated glow appears on it. Pinterest generates words that help people determine why they liked this content. The feature operates on the VLM platform.
The addition is similar to Google’s multimodal search, which combines text and images into a single query. However, Pinterest assists users by generating words that can be used to supplement and refine the search query.
Another feature introduced allows users to refine searches and find alternatives to the presented item in different colors, fabrics, or styles.
Pinterest will expand the service in its apps. Users will be able to long-press any pin in the main feed to initiate a visual search.
Back in October 2022, a coroner blamed Instagram and Pinterest algorithms for a teenager’s death.
