Police detain suspect in cryptocurrency theft worth over 52 million rubles from Moscow region resident

Law enforcement in the Moscow region detained a suspect in a cryptocurrency theft worth more than 52 million rubles (over $720,000 at the time of writing).

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a resident of the Moscow region who contacted the police reported difficulties registering an account on a cryptocurrency exchange. Following the advice of friends, he turned to a man who “promised to hand over his account for permanent use”.

Subsequently, the resident transferred about 3.5 BTC (roughly $163,000) and more than 221,000 Cardano (over $560,000).

“The next day the individual found that the passwords to access the account did not fit, and all his savings were withdrawn,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.

The police, together with Rosgvardiya, detained the suspect in Ryazan Oblast.

A criminal case has been opened into the theft. The detainee is under house arrest.

Earlier in August, it was reported that a resident of Saint Petersburg had his iPhone stolen and cryptocurrency worth 1.5 million rubles was withdrawn.
