Poll: 16% of Russian women prefer to invest in Bitcoin

The Russian Federation ranked second in the world for the number of women investors during 2018–2020. A sixth of them prefer to put their money into cryptocurrency, Forbes writes citing a study by Investing.com.

Analysts analysed statistics across 33 countries and found that the most active investors are Spanish women—37%, Russian women in second place—33%, followed by Italian and Korean women—28%, American women bringing up the rear of the top five—27%.

The number of stock investors in Russia has been growing since early 2020. In August, the Moscow Exchange registered 6.2 million private investors, 2.4 million more than in January. At the same time, the number of women investors has tripled over five years.

Investing’s survey showed that investment preferences among women and men in Russia are similar: the majority are drawn to shares of large companies – 90%, currency – 45% and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) – 44%. 56% of respondents invest in mutual funds, 33% in bank deposits, and 28% in real estate.

Women show more interest in cryptocurrency—16% of respondents.

Russian women also tend to invest in large Russian players—Sberbank, Norilsk Nickel, Lukoil, Magnit and Gazprom—these attract women more. Men prefer foreign giants—Tesla and Apple.

Women aged 25 to 34 in Russia, on average, are prepared to invest between 10% and 30% of their monthly income, according to Investing.

According to Chainalysis, Russia is the second-largest country in the world by the number of active cryptocurrency users. A tenth of all Bitcoin transactions are attributed to residents of Eastern Europe.

In July, the Bank of Russia said that it does not regard cryptocurrency purchases as investing and compared investments in Bitcoin to a game of roulette.
