Pope Prohibits Use of AI in Sermons
Pope Leo XIV urged clergy to resist using AI for sermons.
During a meeting with the clergy of the Roman diocese, Pope Leo XIV urged resistance against the temptation to deliver sermons using artificial intelligence. This was reported by Vatican News.
“All muscles of the body, if we do not use them, they die. The brain must also be exercised, so our intellect needs some practice,” stated the clergyman.
The pontiff emphasized that a chatbot can never replace a living priest, regardless of the capabilities of neural networks now or in the future.
“A sermon is the transmission of faith. AI can never share faith,” he said.
In addition to artificial intelligence, the Pope addressed the topic of social media, urging not to confuse it with real life. According to him, “a common illusion on the internet is perceiving followers and likes as genuine spiritual connections.”
AI Translator in the Vatican
Earlier, the Vatican announced its own artificial intelligence-based system for translating liturgical texts. It adapts sacred scriptures in real-time into 60 languages.
The initiative was implemented in collaboration with the company Translated. The Vatican explained that the solution aims to make the liturgy more accessible to pilgrims and tourists from different countries who visit the basilica daily.
The service can be used without additional settings: simply scan a QR code. After that, a web page with audio and text translation in real-time opens on the smartphone.
The service is based on the AI platform Lara, introduced by Translated in 2024. Developers claim that the system combines artificial intelligence algorithms with the expertise of a vast network of professional translators.
Back in August 2025, former musician Arty Fishel founded a new religious movement in honor of AI—robotism.
