Putin Warns Against Siberian Stagnation Due to Cryptocurrency Mining

The surplus of energy resources used for mining in Siberia should not hinder the region’s development. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during the EEF, reports RBC.

He acknowledged that the country is one of the global leaders in cryptocurrency mining and that businesses in this sector are “earning quite well.”

“Mining is good, but building housing, social facilities, and supplying electricity to production capacities is equally important,” Putin added.

The President proposed to structure this work.

According to Anton Gorelkin, co-author of the mining law and a deputy, the President’s words are a signal to law enforcement agencies.

“The legislative framework for combating grey and black mining has already been created, it’s time to start identifying specific culprits of the energy deficit. Inaction could cause very serious damage to the economy,” he explained on his Telegram channel.

Meanwhile, Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev emphasized that the priority for access to power remains socially significant facilities and the country’s industry.

“We are ready to give surplus energy to miners. [They] must all be legal, registered in the registry, pay taxes, and receive electricity at [a justified] rate,” the official is quoted by TASS.

Back in August, Putin signed a law legalizing mining in Russia.

Earlier, the President described the crypto market as a “very dynamic and promising direction of the modern economy.”
