Quantum Leap: 72-Qubit Computer Tackles Cancer Treatment

Origin Quantum, a company specializing in quantum computing, has applied its cutting-edge technology to breast cancer diagnostics and drug development, according to SCMP.

The firm showcased the capabilities of its quantum computer, Origin Wukong, in biomedical research, including mammographic screening for malignant tumors and the development of small-molecule-based drugs.

For cancer detection, the quantum computer processes medical images swiftly, addressing issues of traditional mammography such as high false-positive rates.

Origin Quantum collaborated with Fudan University and other institutions to explore the potential of quantum computing in developing small-molecule drugs and predicting their crystalline structures. The company launched several quantum computer-based tools capable of forecasting drug toxicity and analyzing drug interactions.

Founded in 2017 in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, Origin Quantum has received support from state funds.

In October 2024, the firm announced that its 72-qubit quantum computing chip had been operating in a “stable mode” on Origin Wukong for nine months, with plans to expand production.

Back in June, a new artificial intelligence model was able to detect 13 different types of cancer with 98.2% accuracy based on DNA data from tissue samples.
