Rakuten Begins Accepting Cryptocurrency Payments in Japan

The Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten provided its customers with the ability to pay with digital assets at thousands of points of sale across the country.

According to the press release, users have access to Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum. They can pay for goods and services through the Rakuten Pay contactless payment app or the Rakuten Point Card credit card.

In the spring, the company plans to integrate a crypto wallet into the app.

Rakuten has promised not to charge a conversion fee. Per month, users can exchange between 1,000 and 100,000 Japanese yen (about $9.38 to $938 at the time of writing).

In August 2018, Rakuten acquired the exchange Everybody’s Bitcoin for $2.4 million.

In February 2019, the company announced plans to add support for digital assets to its app. In August, the corporation launched its own cryptocurrency exchange, Rakuten Wallet.
