Rakuten announced the launch of the Rakuten NFT marketplace. The Japanese e-commerce giant attributed the move to the growing adoption of cryptocurrencies in the country.
The platform will offer users the ability to buy and sell tokens across a range of fields—from sports and entertainment to music and anime—starting in 2023, including peer-to-peer trading.
Owners of intellectual property will be able to create pages to issue and sell NFTs. A variety of payment methods is expected to be introduced.
The platform announced collaborations, in particular with manga artist Hiroshi Kurugane (comics), the Asahi Corporation (TV programs) and the group Under Beasty (J-pop music) for the release of NFT collections.
In March 2021, Rakuten enabled its customers to pay with digital assets at thousands of points of sale across the country.
