Ransomware: average attacks rose 50% in Q3 2020

In the third quarter of 2020, the average daily number of attacks using ransomware rose by almost 50% compared with the first half of the year. Data from research by Check Point show this.

The greatest number of ransomware attacks in Q3 was recorded in the United States, India, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Russia.

In the United States, this figure rose by 98%, in Sri Lanka by 436%. In Russia, growth stood at 57.9%.

Since July, activity by the Maze and Ryuk ransomware groups has intensified significantly. The latter targets around 20 organisations per week.

To prevent cyberattacks, Check Point recommends backing up data and regularly updating software to fix vulnerabilities.

Earlier, U.S. authorities urged victims not to pay ransomware operators subject to sanctions.
