Officials in this East African country allocated for the project a land plot of one square mile (about 2.6 sq km). The costs of the press conference were not disclosed. The initiative is to be implemented by 2036. The Ugandan government expects to attract investment and create new jobs.

The first Akoin City, announced in January 2020 by the rapper and entrepreneur, in Senegal, will occupy an area of 3.1 square miles (about 8.1 square kilometres). All transactions in the city will be carried out 100% in the Akoin (AKN) digital currency on the Stellar network. According to Cointelegraph, the construction is valued at $6 billion.

The publication notes that the Akoin project also collaborates with the Mwale Technopolis in Kenya. AKN is used to pay staff wages and in everyday payment transactions. The team has issued a debit card that enables spending the digital currency online among 40 million merchants worldwide.

As reported in August 2020 Akon became the chief strategist of the presidential campaign of veteran Bitcoin-industry entrepreneur and venture capitalist Brock Pierce.
