Reddit user posts a joke predicting Tesla’s Bitcoin investment

The news of Elon Musk’s Tesla investment in Bitcoin sparked widespread chatter. In this context, some members of the community became interested in a post in the r/Bitcoin subreddit from January 2, 2021, which had remained unnoticed until now.

The screenshot of the post was published by Ouriel Ohayon, CEO of the ZenGo crypto wallet operator.

“I am a software developer in Tesla’s R&D division in California. In the last 72 hours our company bought 24,701 BTC at an average price of $33,142,” said the user under the alias TSLAinsider.

As of the time of writing, the original post removed. Earlier it landed in the r/Tesla subreddit, but received no upvotes and was rejected as a hoax.

The New York Post reported that the author of the post is a 24-year-old student from Germany. In an interview he called the post in r/Bitcoin a joke.

According to the young man, he saw a Twitter exchange between Elon Musk and MicroStrategy head Michael Saylor about large transactions in the Bitcoin network.

“I thought: why not have him buy Bitcoin? He is crazy, and he has plenty of money, so why not?”, the student said.

News that Tesla invested $1.5 bn in digital gold appeared on February 8. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission the company stated that it intends to integrate Bitcoin as a means of payment for its products in the future.

After that, TSLAinsider left in the r/Tesla community another one post:

“I told you so”.

Against the backdrop of positive news from the EV maker, Bitcoin reached $44,800. On February 9, the first cryptocurrency hit the $48,000 mark.

As of writing, the digital gold was trading around $47,150. The coin’s market capitalization exceeded $880.2 billion, according to CoinGecko.

As Charlie Lee, the creator of Litecoin, described Tesla’s investment in Bitcoin as a watershed moment and an example for other companies.
