Riot Games and Ubisoft have entered into a collaboration under the Zero Harm in Comms technology project to combat toxicity in multiplayer games using AI.

“A large number of people are working hard to make gamer projects more positive, inclusive, and ultimately engaging for everyone. Bringing meaningful changes to this complex task requires collaboration across the industry,” the site of the American developer said.

In the initial phase, the partners will build an anonymous in-game database to train AI-powered preventive moderation tools. The algorithms are expected to monitor and curb violations in multiplayer modes.

“Thanks to the technological partnership with Riot Games, we are studying the optimal ways to prevent in-game toxicity as designers of these spaces with direct feedback from our communities,” said Yves Jacquier, executive director of Ubisoft La Forge.

The companies plan to collect data in their projects, but did not specify which ones.

Wesley Kerr, head of technology research at Riot Games, noted that disruptive behaviour is not a unique problem for games.

“Each company, with its own social online platform, is working on solving this complex task. That is why we aim to collaborate with industry partners like Ubisoft, who believe in creating safe communities and positive experiences in online spaces,” he said.

Kerr also added that the project will help Riot “develop systems that ensure healthy and inclusive interaction in games.”

The project is still in its early stages. The companies plan to share the results of the collaboration “with the entire industry” in 2023.

Earlier in October, Activision Blizzard filed a patent application for technology for synthesizing music in video games with the help of artificial intelligence.

In February, Sony introduced AI that defeats professional gamers in the racing simulator Gran Turismo.

In July, OpenAI trained a neural network to play Minecraft. The algorithm can run, swim, navigate obstacles, gather resources, craft diamond tools, hunt animals and cook food.
