Tesla seeks dismissal of class-action suit against Autopilot

Tesla filed a motion to dismiss a class-action suit accusing the manufacturer of false advertising of Autopilot.

In September, robocar owners filed a lawsuit, claiming that the company and its chief executive Elon Musk misled the public about the capabilities of Autopilot and Full Self-Driving. Since 2016 they have marketed the technology as “fully or almost” ready autopilot, but it either does not work or does not exist, the filing says.

Tesla responded that the inability to deliver the long-term ambitious goal is not fraud. The robocar owners’ suit shows ongoing improvement of the technology through software updates to achieve greater and better autonomous capabilities in the future, the company said.

According to the manufacturer, from the outset Tesla made clear that there would be a “significant time” before true autonomous driving would be approved by regulators.

Study: Robots displace workers in China

Industrial robots displace workers, influence wage declines and lower birth rates in China, according to a group of international researchers.

According to their data, up to 77% of jobs in China are automatable. As an example they cited Foxconn, which from 2012 to 2016 replaced more than 400,000 workers with smart machines.

Researchers also found that automation reduces hourly pay, but annual earnings for workers are not affected.

According to the report, the growth in industrial robots does not affect workers’ families. However, the researchers found a 1-2% drop in birth rates and a 10% rise in investments in children’s education.

Researchers believe that without job creation, automation will lead to inequality and social unrest.

DeepMind taught AI to play Diplomacy

Researchers at DeepMind taught AI agents to communicate and coordinate joint plans in the board game Diplomacy.

They examined two protocols: mutual offers and offer-acceptance. The systems use algorithms that identify advantageous deals by simulating the game’s progression under different contractual conditions.

According to the researchers, capable communicating agents significantly outperform basic bots that cannot maintain communication.

Google lets AI models into Sheets without coding

Google unveiled the Simple ML add-on for developing AI models in Sheets.

According to the company, users do not need machine-learning expertise or programming experience. They simply need to create a spreadsheet with data, select a task to perform and run Simple ML. The system will automatically train one or more suitable models.

Currently the tool can create algorithms for filling empty fields in a table or identifying cells containing erroneous data.

Stack Overflow bans publishing ChatGPT-generated answers

The Stack Overflow developer platform banned posting AI-generated answers.

According to moderators, users flooded the forum with thousands of phrases created using the OpenAI ChatGPT chatbot. While many answers looked useful, they often proved to be incorrect. This harmed the site and developers, the company noted.

Stack Overflow added that the ban is temporary, and a final decision will be made “in due course” after internal discussions and consultations with the community.

Google will shut down the web version of the Duplex AI service

By the end of 2022 Google will shut down the web version of the AI service for automatic telephone orders, Duplex.

The system allowed Assistant to navigate websites on its own. With Duplex the assistant could buy movie tickets, check in a user for a flight or view discounts on potentially interesting goods.

TechCrunch notes that the closure of the web version is likely related to the cost of training the AI to analyze pages. Also, if administrators block search engines from indexing site content, Duplex’s online performance would be significantly reduced.

Jidu to start mass production of robomobiles in 2023

In 2023 the Chinese automaker Jidu will launch serial production of robocars with voice control Robo-01.

The unmanned vehicle is equipped with radar, two LiDARs, 12 ultrasonic sensors and 12 high-resolution cameras. Voice recognition is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip.

The price of the unmanned vehicle will be about $55,000.

Adobe Stock to allow selling AI-generated images

The photo agency Adobe Stock will begin selling AI-generated images.

Users will be able to upload to the marketplace images created with neural networks such as Stable Diffusion and DALL-E with appropriate labeling. If customers encounter legal issues, the company will compensate potential damages.

Contributors must confirm their rights to the images they sell. They must not generate illustrations featuring certain people, places or property, and must not imitate artists’ styles without permission.

Startup developed AI to uncover AI-written texts

Originality AI staff taught AI to detect text written by GPT algorithms.

They tested the tool on 20 articles created with GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 models, as well as ChatGPT. Each text consisted of about 500 characters and covered various topics, including news, sports and fun facts.

As a result, the system showed an average detection accuracy of 99.41%.

AR feature in FIFA+ tracks players on the field

In the FIFA+ app, an AR feature to track World Cup players on the pitch has been added, to the app.

Stadium Experience allows fans to view VAR replays from different angles. Also, when you hover the camera over a player, the feature will show his movement speed and a personal heat map.

The feature is available only to fans attending matches in person.
