Roskomnadzor removes Binance from the register of banned websites

Roskomnadzor announced the removal of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange’s website from the register of domain names containing information prohibited in the Russian Federation.

According to the document, Roskomnadzor made the decision on February 2 on the grounds that prohibited information had been removed.

As of writing, a search for the domain binance.com in Roskomnadzor’s register yields no results.

Earlier in June 2020, the Mirninsky City Court ordered the blocking of Binance on the grounds that the platform enables the purchase of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin.

Roskomnadzor’s notice of inclusion in the register of banned websites was received by the exchange only at the end of September. Binance representatives were not notified about court proceedings regarding the site’s blocking.

According to experts, the Prosecutor’s Office did not provide a clear explanation of which regulatory act deems the information published on Binance to be prohibited, and acted unilaterally, which runs counter to procedural norms.

On January 20, the Arkhangelsk Regional Court overturned the decision to block the Binance site in Russia.
