The nonprofit Tor Project, which runs the Tor network, received a letter from Roskomnadzor threatening to block access over information banned on Russian territory. The letter was published on GitLab.
The document states that the organisation must remove the prohibited information from the main page of the Tor Project at torproject.org, where the Tor browser can be downloaded.
What information Roskomnadzor deemed illegal is not specified. If it is not removed, the agency threatened to add the Tor Project page to the register of banned websites and restrict access to it.
The page in question appears in Roskomnadzor’s register only once.
In the public organisation «РосКомСвобода» suggested that the Tor situation is not linked to the Saratov court’s decision.
“By many indications, the attempt to block Tor now is being made using the so-called TSPU, installed at telecom operators and used not by them but by Roskomnadzor within the framework of the sovereign runet law. This view is supported by most experts. However, on what basis Tor is being tested for resilience is unknown,” noted the organisation.
The portal was added to the register of banned sites; the start date of blocking was December 7.
Earlier in December, many experts reported that access to the Tor network was blocked in Russia by providers. GlobalCheck said that the blocking occurs via TSPU.
