A Rostov-on-Don resident was sentenced to eight years in prison for armed robbery of 5 million rubles during a cryptocurrency sale. сообщается on the website of the Kirovsky District Court.
According to the case materials, in August 2022 the defendant, together with an accomplice, met the victim in an office to sell him cryptocurrency. When the victim laid out on the table cash amounting to 5 million rubles, the assailants, threatening with a pistol, took the money and fled.
The court qualified the crime as armed robbery. Although the defendant did not admit his guilt, he was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in a strict-regime penal colony.
Earlier in June, the Supreme Court of Russia for the first time recognised the conversion of bitcoins into rubles as money laundering.
Earlier, experts calculated that the number of rulings by Russian courts in economic cases related to cryptocurrencies, in the period from 2017 to 2021, rose nearly sixtyfold.
