Russia Imposes Mining Ban in Several Regions
The Russian government has approved a list of regions and territories where cryptocurrency mining and participation in mining pools will be prohibited from January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031, as reported by TASS.
The restrictions specifically affect Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, and Chechnya.
Additionally, in certain areas of the Irkutsk region, Buryatia, and the Trans-Baikal Territory, mining is banned during peak energy consumption periods. In 2025, this is from January 1 to March 15, and in subsequent years, from November 15 to March 15.
The Commission on the Development of the Electric Power Industry may adjust the list of regions to maintain consumption balance as industrial demands change.
In July, Russia adopted basic regulations on cryptocurrency mining. ForkLog examined its impact on the industry in a separate article. The country also set an energy consumption limit for individual miners.
In November, the government approved mining restrictions during the autumn-winter heating period in several regions.
Experts have previously pointed out issues with such a ban.
