
Russia submits UN draft convention on countering the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes, including cryptocurrencies.
Russia has submitted to the UN special committee a draft convention on countering the use of information and communication technologies in criminal purposes. says the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
The project was developed by an interagency working group formed in response to ‘the explosive growth of cybercrime worldwide’.
The document addresses threats in the field of international information security, which it regards as the criminal use of cryptocurrencies.
It also expands the scope of international cooperation in extradition and providing legal assistance in criminal matters, including asset identification, arrest, confiscation and return of assets.
“In doing so, the Russian Federation offers the international community its own developments that could form the basis for a future comprehensive instrument to be further developed in light of the positions of states around the world,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.
Earlier in March, President Vladimir Putin ordered additional measures to curb illegal cross-border transfers of digital financial assets.
In July, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov called the “criminal use of cryptocurrencies in the country” a serious challenge and said that into the legislation amendments to confiscate digital assets that have become sources of criminal proceeds are being prepared.
