Russian Finance Ministry and Central Bank at Odds Over Bitcoin Exchanges

The Russian Finance Ministry and the Central Bank are in discussions about establishing cryptocurrency exchanges in the country, yet consensus remains elusive. This was disclosed by Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, as reported by TASS.

“This topic is under discussion, as both the Central Bank and the government, represented by the Finance Ministry, are actively engaged in it. We have not yet found a solution on how to proceed,” said Siluanov.

Earlier, Anatoly Aksakov, head of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets, stated that Russia should not limit itself to existing cryptocurrency trading platforms and could establish its own exchanges.

In August, President Vladimir Putin signed a law on experimental regimes, allowing international settlements in cryptocurrency and the creation of local exchanges. It will come into effect on September 1.

Representatives of the Russian Central Bank announced that they would conduct the first cross-border cryptocurrency payments under the experimental legal regime by the end of 2024.
