Russian Interior Ministry launches silhouette-based recognition system for people and vehicles
The Russian Interior Ministry has rolled out a new system in several Russian regions that can recognise not only faces but also the silhouettes of people and vehicles. The report by ТАСС.
According to the chief executive of the developer company Ntechlab, Andrey Telenkov, the system is operating in five regions of Russia, though he did not specify which ones.
«In the solution that has just been released, it is possible to track a person’s trajectory, count people, and search for them by silhouettes, with very high accuracy,» he said.
Telenkov added that when recognising visually similar people the algorithm takes into account height, gait and other features. The system can also search based on attributes such as beards, hats or glasses.
«The same applies to automobiles. We are all used to the fact that cars are registered by traffic cameras, but there are not many such cameras, and they only film on urban roads and highways,» he continued, the director of Ntechlab.
The algorithm can identify the vehicle, determining its make, colour and distinctive features even when the number plate does not appear in the camera’s field of view.
Earlier in June, media reported that Russian authorities were considering unifying all city CCTV cameras into a single system .
In February, the Moscow authorities announced their intention to install a new system for tracking citizens in the metro.
