Russian users report issues accessing Proton VPN and NordVPN

Users in Russia have reported problems accessing Proton VPN. The company speculated that authorities have begun blocking the service on Russian territory.

“We are currently investigating the issue, but it is not caused by any changes on our side. It is quite possible that local internet providers and authorities are interfering with VPN connections, and in that case we will not be able to resolve such problems.”

The company added that it continues to attempt to circumvent the blockage.

Update:

In Roskomnadzor stated that it is working to block VPN services under the so-called sovereign internet law:

“According to the Law ‘On Communications’, means of circumventing blockages of illicit content are considered a threat. The Centre for Monitoring and Management of the Public Communications Network takes measures to restrict the operation of VPN services that violate Russian law on the territory of Russia.”

Additionally, reports emerged of problems accessing NordVPN. According to data from GlobalCheck, the nordvpn.com site is unavailable in the networks of MTS, Rostelecom, MegaFon, Tele2, Beeline, Yota and 2COM.

Earlier, specialists said they were testing in Russia blocking of popular VPN protocols.

Roskomnadzor began mass-blocking VPN services. The agency argues they help users circumvent restrictions and gain access to information prohibited in Russia.

At the end of May, the Windscribe VPN service said there could be a possible blocking in Russia.
