Russians double interest in buying mining equipment
In February 2021, demand for graphics processing units on the online marketplace Avito rose 2.6-fold from the same period a year earlier, according to RIA Novosti, citing the company’s press service.
Despite the hype, listings for sale of graphics cards increased by only 18%.
Ready-made mining rigs saw demand rise 3.8-fold compared with February last year, while advertisements for their sale on the site grew by 65%.
In early January 2021, amid Ethereum’s rapid price rise, its hash rate rose by 21%, indicating renewed interest by ‘home’ miners in mining the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
Compared with December, Avito analytics recorded a 52% increase in demand for graphics cards.
At the end of 2020, Yandex.Market also reported that visits to graphics card sale listings rose by nearly 70%.
The global market in this period faced a shortage of equipment – high-performance models disappeared from open sale, and the price of graphics cards increased by an average of $100.
Earlier, ForkLog reported that miners from China, South Korea and Taiwan began massively buying gaming laptops based on GeForce RTX 3060 GPUs. This occurred after Nvidia announced plans to limit the hash rate of desktop GPUs.
