Safe expands smart-account features with ERC-4337 support

The digital asset management platform Safe integrated ERC-4337 into the account-abstraction stack for Safe{Core} developers, version 1.4.1.

The Ethereum team rolled out ERC-4337 on the mainnet in March 2023. The standard implements one approach to deploying account abstraction for a crypto wallet, turning it into a smart contract.

“ERC-4337 abstracts away from the hard-coded logic of external accounts (EOAs) and the difficulties that have long hindered the use of such wallets, including pain points such as seed phrases, gas fees and account recovery,” the Safe developers explained.

They noted that they implemented smart accounts in March, launching Safe{Core}. According to them, the number of such user accounts reached 3.6 million across 12 networks.

But before the standard’s integration, developers using the toolchain had only one option for account-abstraction technology — Gelato.

“ERC-4337 offers a simpler user interface, including features such as passwordless sign-in, social recovery, batch transactions, hybrid storage configurations and much more,” the Safe team noted.

Earlier, Visa specialists showed interest in using account abstraction technology to simplify payments.
