OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a full rollout of AI agents could come as soon as this year, as the company nears artificial general intelligence. He set out his views in an essay, Reflections, summing up recent years.
In 2025, the first AI agents will “join the staff” and substantially change companies’ productivity, Altman believes.
AI agents are artificial-intelligence systems capable of making decisions autonomously and carrying out a wide range of operations.
At CES 2025, Nvidia boss Jensen Huang said the industry is moving from generative AI to “agentic” systems—intelligent digital agents able to perform tasks across domains. Such models will radically reshape the labour market, the American chipmaker’s CEO believes.
Altman said the OpenAI team knows how to build artificial general intelligence, bringing the technology closer to human-level reasoning.
“Superintelligent tools will open new horizons for scientific discoveries and innovation, far exceeding the capabilities of human labour. This will lead to a significant increase in abundance and prosperity,” he said.
Huang believes the emergence of new categories of jobs and business models will spur growth in sectors such as healthcare, automotive, software development and many others.
Nvidia superchip
At CES the company unveiled DIGITS—its “smallest and most powerful supercomputer,” aimed at AI. It runs on the GB10 Grace Blackwell chip and will go on sale in May for about $3000.
Among other announcements:
- Cosmos—a platform for training AI agents to interact with the physical world. Early partners include Toyota, which will use the technology to develop autonomous vehicles;
- new GeForce RTX 50 graphics processors based on Nvidia Blackwell, offering high visual realism and performance gains;
- NIM and AI Blueprints services for creating digital humans, podcasts, images and video.
In December Nvidia unveiled the Jetson Orin Nano Super—“its most affordable supercomputer” with generative AI.
In November, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that artificial intelligence will reach human level in 2026.
