Sam Altman secures Indonesia’s golden visa

The head of OpenAI and co-founder Worldcoin Sam Altman has become the first recipient of Indonesia’s ‘golden visa’. Bloomberg reports.

The document grants the right to stay in the country for 10 years. The immigration authorities explained the decision by Altman’s ‘positive international reputation’, which ‘could benefit Indonesia’.

‘Golden visa’ also provides expedited security checks at airports, simplified entry and exit procedures, and other benefits.

In late August, Indonesia launched an initiative to spur economic development. The document allows foreigners to stay in the country for 5-10 years with ‘significant investments’.

According to Bloomberg, a $350,000 investment by an individual in shares of local public companies, savings accounts, or government bonds will secure him a five-year ‘golden visa’.

In June, Altman visited Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia), the agency noted. However, it remains unclear whether he applied for the document or what investments in the country he has made.

Worldcoin launched on July 24. The project’s main product—the World ID protocol—is based on zero-knowledge proofs. It is a mobile identification tool based on retina scanning or a phone number.

Regulators in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Argentina have previously taken an interest in Worldcoin. In Kenya, the project has been suspended, and searches were conducted at the company’s warehouses.

In August, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin received Taiwan’s ‘golden card’, which provides unfettered entry into the country and the right to stay there for more than 180 days.
