The Bitcoin wallet Samourai Wallet has joined the Tor Project Membership programme, supporting the nonprofit with a $50,000 donation. The project team pledged to donate on an annual basis.

\”All free open-source software released by Samourai actively uses Tor Project technologies and developments. Today we are proud to announce that we can support the project’s work by donating $50,000 and join it as a Vidalia Onion member,\” the statement said.

According to Tor Project, Membership programme members enjoy three \”special benefits\”:
\n\n\n\n
- Access to the Onion Advisors group, which assists with integrating the Tor system;
- Participation in exclusive meetings with the Tor Project team;
- Public promotion of the member.

The programme provides three membership levels. The most senior, Shallot Onion, are available to those pledging at least $100,000 per year; Vidalia Onion — from $50,000 per year; Green Onion — from $10,000 to $49,999.

In addition to Samourai Wallet, Vidalia Onion status is also held by Avast antivirus software developer, analytics company Team Cymru and VPN service Mullvad.

Samourai Wallet uses CoinJoin technology, and the ZeroLink protocol, which allows the source and destination of each transferred coin to be hidden from third parties.

In 2020, Europol said that the growing popularity of Samourai Wallet significantly hinders investigations into dark-net activity.
